This review refers to the kindle book edition of The Counts of Gruyère by Anna de Koven also listed as Mrs. Reginald de Koven. Originally published in 1916.I am always browsing the kindle books to see what new and hopefully interesting works there are to be had for free. I came across this one and didn't really know anything about it. There wasn't any info on it, so for all I knew it could have been an historical novel or a straight history. I decided to check it out and found here a very detailed and well researched history of exactly what the title says - The Counts of Gruyère.
Going back as far as the 5th century, Mrs.de Koven sets the scene with wonderfully descriptive pictures of Switzerland, The Alps and surrounding countries. The lives, loves, lands and wars of the many in a long line of descendants of "Gruerius - Chief of the sixteenth Vandal legion" of Grue, is told in remarkable detail; even including some original poetry/song-lyrics of the times. The history is quite interesting to read about. Told in a matter-of-fact fashion, there were though times where it became a bit complex with so many name-sakes to keep straight.(Mrs. de Koven doesn't always specify). However I think it very well researched and a great read for History buffs.

The Kindle: 1373 Locations. A pretty smooth read and formatting for the most part. There were at times letter(s) missing from the first word of a paragraph, however that didn't make much difference. The Title page as well of the table of contents promised illustrations of various places:La Place de Gruyère; The Chateau; Jousting Court; and Church of St. Theodate among others, but were no where to be found.
A very good historical read and you can't beat the price.
